“Tell us something about yourself. What’s something interesting about you? What would we be surprised to know about you?” These are just a few of the questions I dread facing every first day of class. “Why are they so bad?” you may ask. Well, it’s simple: I have no idea how to answer them.
For instance, this year while my classmates were proudly answering such questions with their inspiring stories of living abroad, moving from across the world, enchanting career dreams, unique passions, and so on, I was stuck worrying about how absolutely uninteresting I am—at least on the surface. (In case you were wondering, one of my profound responses ended up being: “I like dogs”)
A little background now: I was born in the wonderful city of Nashville, Tennessee. When I was about eleven, we moved a whole ten minutes away to Brentwood and have stayed there ever since. All of my family is from and basically resides in or around the Nashville area. I attended the same small private school from first grade to senior year. Due to my extremely indecisive nature, I started college with no clue as to what I wanted to do—thus was an “undecided” major for two years. After being forced to make a decision, I finally decided on a major that could encompass a broad range of career options—which was marketing. I ended up graduating from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga last spring with a BS in Business: Marketing. Still unsure of what I wanted to do and where I wanted to go in my career, I decided to delve into a more specific or creative (if you will) area of marketing: advertising.
Which brings me to the present: A grad student studying advertising at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville attempting to write my first blog post about myself for my Social Media class…As I write, those dreaded questions emerge: Who are you? What is interesting about you? What would other people be surprised to know about you?
Although not the kind of answer you would give in class, the real answers are that I am uniquely me, interesting or not, and people might be surprised to know that I am actually grateful for my very ordinary life. It’s been a good one. I have a wonderful family, great friends, and stability. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to learning more and moving forward.
I wouldn’t say I have found my big passion in life, but I love a little bit of a lot: home décor, DIY, event planning, makeup, fashion, art, travel—pretty much any and all interests of a stereotypical girly girl. If you haven’t guessed by now, I am a Pinterest fanatic (follow me at: http://www.pinterest.com/krobin30/). I also love movies and TV (Netflix queen here), and I especially love animals—particularly my golden retriever, Pacey.
Through this blog, I hope to gain insight, inspiration, and grow both personally and professionally. I will be sharing and exploring a wide variety of personal interests and experiences while also digging into my professional interests in marketing, advertising, and social media.
As I said before, I’m indecisive, so I’m always dabbing into a little bit of everything. Hopefully throughout this blog I will find a little more direction and focus, but for the most part I just want to live, learn, and grow. I’m facing forward.
I hope my journey can provide you with valuable insights or at the very least some entertaining content.
